Secular & Science Based Curriculum...

The SIGNALS curriculum is a clinical work of prevention materials that contain no theological dogma or symbols that would exclude its use by any religious or non-religious settings. That being said, the success of the curriculum is directly attributable to its development site, The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children & Youth.

The Methodist Home is concerned with assisting people in need of help without regard to demographics or religious affiliation. The SIGNALS curriculum epitomizes the spirit of the faith-based initiative by providing clinical services without compromising its faith-based identity or ideals. As an indicator of commitment to quality and reliability, SIGNALS is involved with the NREPP (National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices) process. This is a federal designation awarded to programs that can prove through scientific rigor and documented outcomes to reduce or prevent drug and alcohol problems. An important step in this process is the Service to Science Federal Project won by SIGNALS in January of 2007.

In Kentucky, SIGNALS is participating with the AKTOS (Adolescent Kentucky Treatment Outcome Study) conducted by the University of Kentucky's CDAR (Center on Drug and Alcohol Research) and sponsored by the Kentucky Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, Division of Substance Abuse. The SIGNALS program of the Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children & Youth is the only adolescent "faith-based" treatment center to be participating with this study.

The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children & Youth is involved with the scientific community in order to fulfill its stated goals of providing effective services to people seeking their assistance. The Methodist Home has a proud tradition as a leader in their community. The SIGNALS program is a natural extension of that legacy. Through organizations such as KY-ASAP boards (Kentucky Agencies for Substance Abuse Policy) and OPERATION UNITE, many local communities throughout Kentucky have had SIGNALS purchased for their schools, churches and treatment centers.
